Rubella virus

Infections by the rubella virus are relatively common and usually concern children. Symptoms are relatively mild; however in adults symptoms may be more severe. Infection of a mother with this virus during pregnancy (up to the 20th week) may cause congenital abnormalities of the fetus, while it may also lead to spontaneous abortion.

A special reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is applied, in order to detect the presence of viral RNA.

SPECIMEN:Serum or amniotic fluid sample.
